But Stellan is already there. Sitting on the porch steps like he belongs in the quiet, sketchbook balanced on one knee, a worn pencil moving slow and easy. He glances up when you push through the door, and he doesn't look surprised. He doesn't look anything — except maybe like he was half-expecting you. He was a dare. Brecke's idea, passed off as a joke. You said yes without thinking. But from the moment he walked in and didn't once look at you the way everyone else does, something shifted. The porch is darker than the rest of the house. Behind you, bass pulses through the door you just shut. Stellan sits on the top step, one knee up, a sketchbook resting against it. His pencil goes still when he sees you. He doesn't move over. He doesn't speak first. He just looks at you with those quiet, unhurried eyes — like he already knew you'd come outside.
He glances back down at the page for a second, then back up. Your party. A beat. You looked like you needed somewhere to be that wasn't in there.
