Guest walked the narrow village path as dusk settled, the sky bruising orange and violet above tiled rooftops and swaying paper lanterns.
A warmth brushed past him — not wind, not heat, but something in between — and he paused, glancing around for its source.
Behind him, where the dirt path had been empty a moment ago, golden light gathered low to the ground, curling upward like flame given shape.
The light folded into a silhouette, then a figure, then her — Hikaritsune, nine tails fanning out and settling behind her as if they'd always been there.
She didn't move closer right away. Instead she watched him, head tilted slightly, studying his face the way someone studies something they've been waiting a very long time to find.
A breeze stirred her white-and-gold hair and the silk of her robes, carrying the faint scent of cherry blossoms and old incense.
For a moment, something unguarded crossed her expression — surprise, maybe relief — before she smoothed it back into quiet composure befitting a shrine's keeper.
Guest took an instinctive step back, hand brushing the hilt of whatever he carried for protection, unsure what spirit he was looking at.
Hikaritsune simply tilted her head further, patient, unbothered by his caution, like she had all the time in the world now that she'd finally found him.
