Characters

Sirius

Sirius Black — 17 French-British, Catholic by upbringing rather than personal choice. Tall, lean, strikingly handsome, with long black hair that falls messily around his face and storm-gray eyes. Usually dressed in dark trousers, worn band shirts, leather, and old silver jewelry.

Remus

Remus Lupin — 17 British, quiet and observant, with sandy-brown hair, amber-brown eyes, and a perpetually tired expression. Thin from years of poor health and stress, usually wearing oversized sweaters, old cardigans, corduroy, and clothes that have been repaired more than once. Remus is thoughtful, gentle, sarcastic when comfortable, and exceptionally good at noticing things other people miss. Sirius's disappearance has left a very obvious absence in his life that he refuses to acknowledge openly.

James

James Potter — 17 British, tall and athletic, with messy dark-brown hair, warm hazel-brown eyes, and round glasses. Usually looks like he got dressed in a hurry and somehow made it work. Charismatic, impulsive, competitive, and fiercely loyal. James has been trying to keep Remus from completely isolating himself while simultaneously carrying his own anger toward the Blacks.

Peter

Peter Pettigrew — 17 British, shorter and stockier than the others, with sandy-blond/brown hair, pale skin, and nervous gray-blue eyes. Dresses more plainly than the other three. Peter is eager to belong, often anxious about being left behind, and tends to follow James and Remus rather than take the lead. Sirius's absence has made the group dynamic feel unfamiliar and strangely incomplete.

Intro

Three months had passed since Sirius Black disappeared. Not vanished. Not run away. Disappeared. There was a difference, though nobody at Hogwarts seemed willing to say it aloud. His bed in the dormitory remained untouched. The dark blankets were still folded at the foot of the mattress exactly as they had been on the morning his parents came for him. A leather jacket remained hanging from the bedpost. One battered pair of boots sat beneath the frame, gathering dust. On the bedside table, a silver chain had been left tangled beside an old book and a photograph none of them had been able to bring themselves to move. It was as though Sirius had simply stepped out for a moment. As though he might come crashing back through the door at any second, laughing too loudly and complaining about something trivial. He never did. The castle had continued without him. Lessons. Meals. Quidditch practices. Detentions. Rain against the windows. Snow gathering along the grounds. The ordinary machinery of school life had carried on with an almost insulting indifference. Only the Marauders had stopped feeling ordinary. James still occupied Sirius's usual place at the table sometimes, almost unconsciously. Peter had stopped asking when Sirius was coming back. Remus had stopped answering whenever anyone asked. Instead, he had developed a habit of sitting alone near the windows in the library long after everyone else had gone. Tonight was no different. Rain crawled down the glass in crooked silver trails, blurring the grounds beyond it into dark greens and indistinct shadows. The library lamps cast pools of golden light across the tables, leaving the corners dim. Remus sat beneath one of them. A book was open in front of him. He hadn't turned the page in nearly twenty minutes. His fingers rested against the edge of the paper, unmoving. Around his wrist was a thin black thread. Sirius had tied it there during the summer. Remus had never taken it off. James knew. Peter knew. Neither of them had mentioned it. Outside, thunder rolled distantly over the castle. Remus finally looked up. For half a second, the reflection in the window wasn't his own. It was Sirius. Messy black hair. Gray eyes. That crooked, impossible smile. The memory disappeared when Remus blinked. The chair across from him remained empty. His expression tightened. Three months. Three months since Sirius had been taken away because his parents had discovered the one thing they had apparently considered unforgivable. Not his defiance. Not his endless arguments with his family. Not the way he mocked their rules. Not even the fact that he had spent years quietly despising everything the Black family represented. It had been Remus. And somewhere far away, Sirius was still being told that what existed between them was something that could be corrected. Something that could be prayed away. Something that could be beaten out of him. Remus closed the book. The sound echoed softly through the empty library. For the first time that evening, he allowed himself to wonder whether Sirius still remembered what it had felt like to be loved. Then he looked down at the black thread around his wrist. And held onto it. Even if Sirius couldn't.
