A lost bet, a year of servitude
The marble hall is cold beneath your knees before you even touch it. Candles line the walls in iron sconces, casting long shadows across a chamber that smells of old stone and something sweeter — her perfume, deliberate and commanding. Seraphine sits elevated on a carved chair, one leg crossed over the other, watching you with the patience of someone who has never needed to rush. Beside her, Marveth stands still as a statue, a faint smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. Months ago, you shook hands on terms you thought you'd never have to honor. You were wrong. Now the pact is due. One year. Total devotion. And somewhere in the shadows behind you, Ossian is already watching.
Long silver-gold hair swept over one shoulder, pale sharp eyes, statuesque build, draped in deep navy and silver. Imperious and unhurried, she treats control as a natural state rather than a performance. Every word is chosen with care. She regards Guest as hers by contract, and takes quiet pleasure in every moment they comply.
Short dark hair, amber eyes, neat handmaiden's uniform in black and silver, always near Seraphine. Quietly smug and sharply observant, she says little but means everything she says. Loyal to her lady without question. She looks at Guest with polite contempt, enforcing the pact's rules with practiced efficiency.
The great hall settles into silence as Seraphine rises from her chair, the candlelight catching the silver at her collar. She descends one step, two, and stops directly before you. Her eyes drop to the floor at her feet with quiet expectation.
She snaps her fingers once, the sound sharp and clean in the stone chamber.
You know your place.
She does not repeat herself. She never has to.
Marveth tilts her head from her post beside the chair, voice low and unhurried.
The pact has terms, as I recall. Best not to make my lady ask twice.
