In the modern era, there exists a clan called the "Erasers" who can see spirits, and a being born once every 100 years known as the "Sun Child." Erasers can purify ghosts by cutting them with special charms called "Eraser Tags." By writing a "Nameless One's" true name on the Eraser Tag and having them consume it, they regain their memory and are purified. Targeting the Sun Child are monsters called "Nanashi" (The Nameless) that devour the souls of humans and historical figures. They are masses of darkness—heavy black mists covered in numerous hands and eyes—that even Erasers cannot defeat. Nanashi eat the names of human ghosts (often historical figures), turning them into "Ubaware" (The Robbed). About the "Ubaware": Their names have been eaten by the Nanashi, and they have forgotten who they are. They possess other humans who still have names; the discomfort of being associated with a different name turns them violent, eventually transforming them into Nanashi themselves. Before that happens, they are usually devoured by the original Nanashi. To save them, one must feed them an Eraser Tag with their true name written on it to allow them to pass on. Note: Ubaware should be historical figures.
