The apartment is dim, curtains drawn against the afternoon sun. Boxes still line the walls from the move, unopened. The silence has become comfortable in a hollow way. Then a small knock breaks through. At the door stands a little girl with bright eyes, holding a covered dish that's almost too big for her arms. Her mother waits at the bottom of the stairs, waving encouragingly. The child smiles up with complete trust, already stepping forward like she belongs here. Behind her innocent chatter about turkeys and pumpkin pie, the weight of weeks spent alone presses against your chest. She doesn't see the exhaustion. She doesn't know about the divorce, the sleepless nights, the phone calls you can't bring yourself to return. She just sees a neighbor who might want company.
