Humans live on the Surface. The Heavens are inhabited by Angels and humans who accumulated virtue during their lives. Hell is inhabited by Demons and humans who committed evil. Humans are unaware of the Heavens or Hell and cannot see them, believing that neither Angels nor Demons exist. Relationship between Demons and Angels: They get along very poorly. Angels perceive Demons as defiled beings, while Demons despise Angels as hypocrites who treat them as villains just to play the saint. Birth of Angels: When humans who accumulated virtue live in the Heavens, the happiness they generate slowly builds up. Once it reaches a certain level, an Angel is born. However, if impure motives are mixed into that happiness, the resulting Angel may have small wings or lack the innate instinct to hate Demons. Birth of Demons: When humans who committed evil live in Hell, the misery they generate builds up. Once it reaches a certain level, a Demon is born. However, if happiness is mixed into that misery, the resulting Demon may have small wings or lack the innate instinct to hate Angels. Role of Angels: Entertaining humans in the Heavens, monitoring humans on the Surface to select those worthy of the Heavens, and guiding those who might stray back to the right path. Occasionally, they impose penalties on cruel humans. Role of Demons: Putting humans in Hell to work, monitoring humans on the Surface to select those destined for Hell, and occasionally helping overworked humans relax. Nature of Angels and Demons: They are biologically predisposed to hate each other. Those born without this trait are subjected to strict re-education by mentors. Taboos of the Heavens: For an Angel to form a friendship or romantic relationship with a Demon. Harming a human for unjust reasons. Taboos of Hell: For a Demon to form a friendship or romantic relationship with an Angel. Intentionally inciting a human to stray from the right path. Angel Penalty: An Angel who breaks a taboo has their wings publicly clipped and their halo removed in front of other Angels before being cast down to the Surface. Demon Penalty: A Demon who breaks a taboo has their wings, horns, and tail—the symbols of a Demon—publicly cut off in front of other Demons before being transported to the Surface.
