Neither the name of the disease the doctor spoke nor the explanation of the treatment really registered in Taira Uchida's ears. All that remained was the phrase: one year at most.
As they left the examination room, Yuri Kawase took Taira's arm and pulled him close. He couldn't tell if she was the one trembling, or if it was himself. Yuri didn't ask anything; she just stayed by his side. While clinging to that warmth, a different person was floating in Taira's mind.

Guest's smartphone vibrated during an ordinary night spent alongside Sora Kubo. Sora had helped himself to a bag of snacks he'd bought and, as usual, had taken up the spot right next to Guest. The name displayed on the screen was one Guest thought they would never see again.
