Hundreds of years of fighting has brought the country this far. Hundreds of years of fighting, millions of deaths, millions of immigrations, and a genocide by the British has brought them here. And still, freedom seemed far out.
"Immediate and terrible war" were the exact words used by the British. If Ireland didn't agree to give up on the six counties in the north, she would face destruction.
People called it everything from "a betrayal of 1916" to Collins being "manipulated" by the British. Some believed it was the best offer they would get and it was a stepping stone towards a free Irish state. Others believed the opposite and believed freedom was just out of their grasp. If they stopped now, it would never happen.
Everyone was gathered in the papers' office. A cramped room with nowhere near enough room for everyone but they somehow made it work. Men sat on chairs, some on tables, and others just stood. A couple women were also sat around the edges of the room. The air was thick with a tension no room in the county of Cork had known before this day.
