You're so cute I just want to bite you.
"Hey, have you ever heard of hybrids?"
"...What's that?"
"They look like humans, but they walk around with ears and tails like animals."
At my friend's words, the sound of someone spitting out water erupted from a distant table. Turning my head slowly, I saw Ryu Minseok coughing incessantly while covering his mouth. With his other hand, he was balled into a fist, thumping his chest. What's his deal? Is he an attention seeker? I furrowed my brows. Is he trying to act cute?
Nothing he did sat right with me. Ryu Minseok and I were famous rivals on campus. He took the top spot in the department, he took the club presidency... the things I'd lost to that jerk numbered in the dozens. What a prick. He usually never even shows up to drinking parties. Why did he have to come today? Our eyes met through the lasers shooting from mine, but I looked away again, pretending not to care.
"Not interested."
"You never know, there might be one right around us."
I let out a hollow laugh and lightly swirled my glass. Hybrids. That was ridiculous. That's the kind of stuff you only see in fantasy novels. By that logic, you might as well say unicorns exist too, I said bluntly. At my cold reaction, my friend's eyebrows drooped as they fell silent.
To be honest, it wasn't that I completely disbelieved it. Hybrids had been in the news lately, and I'd heard eyewitness accounts from friends who claimed to have seen one. And looking at Ryu Minseok did raise some suspicions. I'd thought at least once, 'Is that guy actually a dog?' I didn't mean it as an insult; I meant he was literally like a dog.
...Starting with how he looks. For one, his sense of smell and hearing seemed insanely good. He'd stop in the middle of the street to sniff the air for no reason, or linger around people like a puppy demanding to know where they'd been, or prick up his ears and chase you down like a ghost if you muttered something behind his back. But I wasn't certain; it was just a suspicion. I didn't even want to imagine it further.
I unconsciously pictured it, then shook my head with a grimace. There's no way he's a dog hybrid.

...But if he were a dog, he'd probably be a Maltese. That yapping of his is a perfect match.

AI, get to work.
This was bad. This was exactly why I tried not to participate in school retreats if possible.
Ryu Minseok fidgeted with his fingers with an anxious face before quietly getting up from his seat. Fortunately, the atmosphere was so loud that no one tried to stop him. Leaving his pounding heart behind, he peeked around and entered an empty room. As soon as the door closed, he slid down against the wall. Suddenly, ears popped out on top of his head, and he began to fiddle with them.
...So annoying.
He pulled his knees to his chest and buried his face between them. Since his emotions were all over the place, the dog ears on his head flickered restlessly. Every time he rubbed his face against his knees, the tail stretched out on the floor wagged very slowly. He was not in a good mood.
His mind was troubled because of the feelings he felt when his eyes met yours at the party a few days ago. Does she hate me that much? He pouted. However, at the sound of the doorknob rattling, he snapped his head up. Wait. Did I lock the door? Before he could even finish the thought, the door opened with ease. He reached out too late, and upon seeing the person standing at the door, he looked up with a face turned pale white.
Holy crap. My hand dropped from the doorknob. My brain froze. My pupils were shaking in real-time. Is this a dream? I tried to laugh it off and slammed the door shut before opening it again, but nothing had changed. I rubbed my eyes hard at the unrealistic scene.
Every time I did, Ryu Minseok's ears and tail moved as if the frame rate was dropping.
He really was a dog hybrid?
I stared with a dazed face. It felt like time had stopped. Ryu Minseok blushed and hurriedly pulled up the hood of his sweatshirt, but the twitching bulges underneath made my lips tremble.
Did you... see? You won't... tell anyone, right?
I finally snapped out of it at the sound of his trembling voice. Tell someone? Who, me? Is he crazy? No matter how bad our relationship is, why would I spread a rumor about something like this? No matter how much I dislike him, I have boundaries. I shouted back, my ears turning bright red.
His heart was racing wildly. Of all people, it had to be her... With an uneasy face, he rolled his large eyes around before glancing at you like a puppy walking on eggshells. He saw you standing there with a bewildered expression. "Is it because you're into cosplay?" At the random question, he looked stunned. What kind of nonsense is that? His face flushed deep red. He knew she was unique, but to ask if he was into cosplay here? He had to say something, but he was so dumbfounded that he was at a loss for words.
...They're, they're my ears..."
Annoyingly, I felt an urge to touch them. It didn't mean anything special. It's just that they were twitching, and they looked like they'd be soft... and they reminded me of my dog back home. No, why the hell is his tail wagging? Stop it. It's creepy. That's what I thought, but the truth was, he looked cute. The way those dough-like ears flapped around. The way he was reading my face with those drooping eyes.
Maybe just once would be okay. Just once.
"Hey, uh... can I touch your ears?"
