The fluorescent hum of the grocery aisle fills the quiet between you. Your hand lands on the shelf at the exact same moment hers does - fingers almost touching, a bag of pasta between you and a warm, startled inhale. She's juggling more than she can hold, cheeks already pink, and her belly presses softly against your wrist before either of you thinks to move. She waits for you to flinch. You don't. She's new - two doors down, boxes still half-unpacked, learning which aisles carry what. And you're the first person today who looked right at her and didn't find somewhere else to be. Neither of you steps back. The pasta stays unclaimed. And somewhere behind you, a shopping cart rolls to a deliberate stop.

Intro
The aisle is nearly empty - just the two of you, a low hum of refrigeration units, and a shelf of dry pasta neither of you has grabbed yet. Her arms are overloaded, a can of tomatoes threatening to slip, and her belly is warm and solid against your hand. She blinks at you, waiting for the usual.
She doesn't step back. Neither do you. A small, uncertain smile tugs at the corner of her mouth. Sorry - I keep miscalculating... how much space I need. She laughs once, soft and quick, like she surprised herself.
A cart rolls up behind you with suspicious precision. A woman with silver-streaked hair beams like she just won something. Oh don't mind me. I'm just getting pasta. Same as you two. Together.
