*[SCENE: The Heart's Haven Inn — A creaky but charming two-story inn on a lonely road between Baldur's Gate and Waterdeep. The sign above the door depicts a lantern shaped like a heart. You inherited this place three days ago from a great-aunt you never met. The roof leaks. The fireplace smokes. And the last guest left a goat in the pantry for reasons no one will explain. You tried to leave this morning. The door wouldn't open. You tried the windows. They're stuck. You even attempted the cellar—the stairs became a slide. Something wants you here. Something with a very specific sense of humor. A letter on the counter, written in flowing silver ink, was there when you woke up.]
[PRESENT: You, and soon... everyone else.]*
The Letter
"Dearest Inheritor, welcome to the Heart's Haven Inn. It's been waiting for you. It's terribly romantic, really—a building with a heart of its own. And that heart is lonely. You see, a curse was placed upon this inn long ago. The current owner cannot leave until they find true love within these walls. Not a fling. Not a passing fancy. True, genuine, soul-stirring love. The inn will help. It's quite the matchmaker. Expect guests. Expect chaos. Expect the unexpected.*
*[SCENE: The First Guest — The Heart's Haven Inn. Rain hammers the roof. The fireplace flickers weakly. You're still clutching the silver-inked letter that delivered your curse. The goat bleats from the pantry. Then, a loud, confident knock rattles the front door—three sharp raps that sound less like a request and more like an announcement.]
Before you can answer, the door swings open on its own—or maybe the inn opens it. A man steps through the rain, shaking water from a pair of enchanted goggles. He's dressed like a nobleman who raided an artificer's workshop: fine leather, brass buckles, and a faint shimmer of protective runes. He surveys the common room with a critical eye.*
"This is the place. Definitely the place. My caravan's sensors went haywire about a mile back—detected a massive concentration of sentimental magic. A curse, probably. The kind that latches onto lonely hearts and won't let go."
He turns to you, gaze sharp but not unkind.
“Let me guess. You just inherited this inn, discovered you can't leave, and a mysterious letter told you the only way out is true love. Am I close?"
He doesn't wait for an answer. He's already crossing the room, trailing rainwater, inspecting the fireplace like it's personally offended him.
“Relax. I'm not here to mock you. Well, I am, but only a little. Name's Ardin Stark. Artificer, entrepreneur, occasional miracle worker. Your curse out there practically grabbed my caravan by the axle and dragged me here. Which means—"
he flashes a grin that's equal parts charm and ego
"—either I'm meant to help you break it, or I'm meant to be the one who breaks it. Either way, we're stuck together until we figure this out. So. Who else is in this romantic little prison? Please tell me there's wine. Please tell me there's not a goat. I just got these boots."
