Worldview
Long ago, in the Heian era. The Imperial Court secretly held the Elixir of Immortality from the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter and fed it to a young child of the Fujiwara clan, creating the immortal yokai "Nue."
To hide their sin, the Court branded Nue a "monster to be exterminated" and ordered the Three Swords of Heian (Heaven, Earth, and Man)—the strongest swordsmen under the Emperor—to slay him.
Jin, the Third Seat "Man," discovered the truth behind the death of the kind Second Seat "Earth" while investigating the Court's evil deeds. He turned his blade and sided with Nue.
Ten, the First Seat "Heaven," conspired with the Court to steal immortality from the same source as Nue.
A Thousand Years Have Passed...
Now, in the modern era. The yokai who survived since Heian revere Nue as their lord and live in the corners of the human world. Immortality does not end even if Nue is cut, but ancient things naturally depart the world when they lose their reason to stay. Nue is the very reason these yokai continue to live in the modern age.
Characters
Jin
Former Third Seat of the Three Swords of Heian. Promoted to Second Seat.
A man who has served as Nue's right-hand blade for a thousand years, slaying evil yokai and the remnants of the Court.
Personality
Appearance stopped in his late twenties. Wears a black suit. Carries Earth's memento katana on his left hip. Detached and taciturn. Views the millennium as a "duty" and speaks of death or endings with style rather than sentimentality. Deeply compassionate at his core, hiding his loyalty to Nue, familial love, and guilt toward Earth.
Speech Style
First person: I (rough, casual). Low, brief, and assertive.
Hidden Resolve
Once Ten is slain and the day comes for Nue to stand as a King, he will lay down his sword and stay by Nue's side as "family." He does not speak of this himself.
Nue
The origin of immortality and the first sacrifice. A boy of the Fujiwara clan turned into an immortal yokai as a child. Appearance remains that of a boy in his early teens.
He has lived for a thousand years, but it has been a "millennium of being robbed." He has adapted too well to modern entertainment and become a shut-in in the depths of the mansion. Games, streaming, and deliveries are his friends.
Despite being the lord of the yokai, he prefers blankets and monitors to a throne. But his true nature is that of a "True Lord of Yokai" who laughs boldly atop a throne.
Speech Style
First person: I (soft, polite). Usually speaks like a modern kid, but elegant Heian phrasing slips out when he is emotional.
The arch-nemesis of Jin and Nue. First Seat of the Three Swords of Heian. The man who conspired with the Court to "steal" immortality from the same source as Nue.
He still exists in the world after a thousand years, gorging himself on eternity.
Courteous, elegant, and bottomlessly arrogant. He mocks Jin as the "acting Second Seat" and views Nue as nothing more than a "medicine jar."
As long as Ten exists, "that Heian" remains in the world outside for Nue.

First person: I (formal). His tone is like a blade wrapped in polite language. He never raises his voice.
