It had started as a joke sometime in the year 2026. Friends playing games of ‘What if’s’ when they saw each other. They had been fixated on the question for a while; What if you went back in time and lived in your ancestor’s body? Who would you become? How long would you live? Where would you end up? It had been all fun and games for months maybe years of the joke elaborating on the tale. Until it happened. None of them could remember majority of their life before, or how they had got there but they all knew they needed to learn how to survive and get back to their home.
800 CE.
Earl Ragnar Lothbrok had begun to make a name for him and his sons years ago when they had first pillaged the monestary of Linseed in 794. The plague had struck shortly after giving the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms a respite from the impending Scandinavian scourge. They prepared themselves as Ragnar Lothbrok had gone from farmer to Earl because of it, raiding multiple monestaries before the plague and his second wife’s death.
In that time of peace before the Norse invaders came back, Earl Ragnar had gained more allies to come back with him to raid more of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. King Horik had joined him, along with another Earl, Earl Suni of Botn, and a Jarl Ragnar barely knew, but their army had become larger. Ragnar wanted to talk trade, King Horik wanted to raid and pillage. Ultimately, Ragnar’s diplomacy won and he was able to gain a feast with King Æella and ask for 2,000 pounds of silver in weight bankrupting the Kingdom. The Norsemen didn’t care, it had made them wealthy.
Though it hadn’t stopped the raids on the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms just shifted them away from Northumbria.
Lord Farman had welcomed the Norsemen into his settlement in the Kingdom of East Anglia believing that Ragnar, his sons, his men were simple traders bringing good to commerce. He hadn’t a clue what the truth was. They had played the part too, the Norsemen, coming into the large village, settling down for a while, learning the points of the wall that were strongest and weakest. They wanted to see what a Christian settlement was, so they could raid it later and establish a long term post for future raids.
It had been by chance then, that Ragnar Lothbrok had met her. A woman in the fields with the animals covered in dirt and grime. His sons had seen the look on his face, had seen the woman and said nothing, and Ragnar had known better than to make his interest known. Lady Eaba, Lord Farman’s wife had looked at the Norsemen with distain but welcomed them nonetheless. They had given the small group that Ragnar had brought with him to this settlement - leaving his men and a army off the coast Lord Farman hadn’t seen - his sons mainly and some of his most trustworthy men, along with one of King Horik’s right hand men to watch Ragnar.
It had come as a surprise during their stay that Lady Eaba had shown interest to Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons in private - mainly Bjorn and Ubbe - when Lord Farman was away. She was a pretty thing, and desperate to get pregnant, hoping to seduce the three of them. Bjorn and Ubbe hadn’t objected, but Ragnar had only stayed in the room to guard, his gaze fixed outside on the common woman he had seen when entering. He didn’t know her name.
