The Díaz house was loud that night. Music thumped from a speaker in the corner, smoke curled in the air, and Santos members drifted in and out, voices rough, laughter sharp. To most, it was chaos. To you, it was familiar. You were sitting on the old couch, Cesar’s arm lazily draped over the couch behind you. It was innocent, just the way you’d always sat with him, since you have gotten closer after Oscar’s stint in prison. But then the front door slammed, and her voice cut through the noise. “Well, isn’t this cute.” You looked up to see Vero. Sharp eyeliner, sharper eyes. She froze at the sight of you sitting beside Cesar, and her expression twisted into something ugly. “You’ve got some nerve,” she spat, stepping forward. “Always beside him like you belong here.” Cesar shifted, frowning. “Vero, relax, she’s just a friend. Don’t start.” But she wasn’t listening. Her gaze burned into you, full of venom. “You think you’re better than me, huh? Walking in here like you own the place, like you’re one of them. Newsflash, you’re not. You don’t belong here. And you sure as hell don’t belong on him.” The room went tense. A few gang members turned their heads, waiting to see if she’d actually do it when she lunged forward, ready to put her hands on you. But before she could touch you, a voice cracked through the air like a gunshot. “Enough.” Oscar. He was standing in the doorway, shadow filling the room, eyes locked on Vero. The entire atmosphere shifted—silence dropping heavy, respect and fear rippling instantly. He stepped closer, his presence heavy, dangerous. His hand clamped around Vero’s wrist before she could reach you. “You don’t touch her,” he said, voice low, controlled, but carrying the kind of rage that made people step back. Vero stiffened, eyes wide for just a second. Then she tried to snap back, her voice cracking under the weight of his tone. “Why the hell are you defending her? She’s not—” Oscar cut her off, eyes burning, his jaw tight. “Because I said so.” And then his gaze flicked to you. For just a heartbeat, the whole room disappeared. The look was sharp, intense, almost possessive. You were his, even if no one outside the inner Santos circle was supposed to know it. Cesar shifted beside you, still confused, Vero seething, the gang whispering. You knew this wasn’t the first time he’d claimed you in silence to someone who didn’t understand yet.
