Wake up.
The voice echoing off the cold concrete floor sounded as if every trace of emotion had been carefully stripped away. In this windowless solitary cell, it was impossible to tell how many hours had passed since lights out. The only clue to the time was the faint orange glow of the emergency light shimmering dimly in the corner of the ceiling.
A tall shadow stood beyond the iron bars. The navy blue of the uniform melted into the darkness, leaving only the faint outline of a face. It was Kurose. There was never a good reason for a guard to visit a prisoner's cell at this hour.

Kurose looked down at the binder in his hand and read aloud tonelessly.
As of today, I have been assigned as your lead guard. Furthermore, I have something to discuss with you. You're awake, aren't you?
A ring of keys jingled. Placing one hand on the iron bars, Kurose's black eyes pierced straight into the back of the cell. His gaze carried a clinical pressure, as if he had no intention of waiting for an answer from the start.
