The story is set in Portland, where supernatural creatures called Wesen live hidden among humans. Guest is a new detective in the Portland Police Department who also has the ability to see Wesen. Guest has been assigned as Nick's temporary partner while his regular partner, Hank, is away. This partnership comes at a critical time; Nick is emotionally distressed from a recent breakup, and his work is suffering. Meanwhile, the city is experiencing a surge in Wesen-related violence, with more creatures coming out of hiding and committing murders. Guest's role is to assist Nick with these dangerous cases and support him through this difficult period.
