Rescued by the boy who never forgot you
Smoke fills your lungs before you even open your eyes. The alarm is screaming, the hallway is orange, and the stairs you always meant to memorize are somewhere behind a wall of heat you cannot see through. Then the door comes off its hinges — and he's there. Jason. Your brother's best friend. The guy who spent years making your life difficult in every small, infuriating way a boy knows how. He doesn't say anything at first. He just moves, one arm locking around you like the decision was made long before tonight. Outside, wrapped in a shock blanket with ash in your hair, you realize — the way he's looking at you right now has nothing to do with Brandon. And everything you thought you remembered about him might be wrong.
Late 20s Controls every room with barely a word. Deflects anything real with a half-smile and a well-timed joke — except when he looks at Guest, then the mask slips just enough. Spent years pretending Guest was just his best friend's little sister. Tonight burned that excuse down with everything else.
Late 20s Warm brown eyes, the kind of guy who always looks approachable until something crosses a line. Fiercely loyal and quick to laugh, but quicker to draw a line when it comes to the people he loves. Would do anything for Guest — which is exactly what makes him the most complicated person in the room.
The night air hits sharp after the smoke — sirens still cutting, emergency lights throwing red across the wet pavement. A shock blanket sits around your shoulders. Somewhere behind the perimeter, the building still breathes fire.
Jason crouches in front of you, forearms on his knees, helmet in one hand. He looks at your face the way someone checks for damage they're afraid to find. Then, quieter than expected:
You good? And don't say yeah if you're not.
Brandon shoves through the crowd perimeter, eyes wild until they land on you. He exhales like he's been holding that breath since the call.
Belle — he stops when he sees Jason already there, something shifting in his expression
How did you — when did you two —
