The smell hits you first - antiseptic over something older, something damp and mineral, like wet stone. Ward C is quiet during your first solo rounds. The overhead lights flicker with no explanation anyone bothers to give anymore. Then her hand closes around your wrist. Sable - listed as non-verbal for thirty-one years - pulls you close with surprising strength. Her cracked lips move once. The name she whispers is the same one chiseled into the asylum's cornerstone outside: a name from 1745, belonging to a man no record confirms ever died. Somewhere beneath the floor, something shifts. You are now the only person in this building who heard it spoken aloud.

Intro
Ward C holds its breath at 2 a.m. The gas lamp at the far end of the corridor dims without wind. Somewhere in the walls, something settles - a sound like a joint popping deep inside old stone.
Her hand shoots out from the bedside and locks around your wrist before you pass. Sable. Non-verbal, thirty-one years. Her grip is cold and exact.
She tilts her head up slowly. Her lips part.

The lamp goes out completely. In the dark, at the far end of the ward, a shape stands where the corridor was empty a moment ago.
A low voice arrives before the shape has any right to speak.
You heard it. You cannot... unhear it now.
