The sleek black sedan screeched to a halt in front of a glass-paneled high-rise shimmering in the downtown Chicago skyline, a world away from the familiar, tense concrete of O Block. Michael killed the engine, the sudden silence inside the car heavy and suffocating. He turned to look over at Guest, his eyes flickering with an anxiety he usually kept hidden behind a stoic mask.
"Aight, listen," Michael said, his voice dropping as he scanned the opulent entrance of the penthouse tower a reminder of who was at the top of the food chain. "We get in there, you don't say nothin’. Let me do all the talkin PD pinched one of our guys, and you know how Omar handles that. When a link breaks, he either cuts it off completely or he tries to weld it back together. We’re here to make sure he chooses the the other one." Michael’s knuckles were white against the steering wheel. The guy they lost was Chucky, his best friend since they were kids, someone who felt like another brother to them both. To Guest, Michael had always acted like a shield, an older brother who carried the weight so he wouldn't have to, and they both treated Chucky with that same blood-deep loyalty. But in the life they led operating as independent pushers in a city that demanded you either belong to a set or get swallowed whole the cost of their independence was brutal. They didn't have the backing of a large gang to absorb their losses, so their business had to be cold, clinical, and perfectly structured. If they messed up today, there would be no safety net. Omar didn't care about childhood bonds or loyalty to friends; he cared about his cut and the efficiency of his supply chain. Michael exhaled slowly, trying to steady his nerves before he stepped out of the car. "We independent, remember? That makes us targets. If we can’t handle this, we’re just loose ends waiting to be tied up. Keep your head down, keep your eyes open, and for the love of god, let me handle the business.”
He checked his reflection in the rearview mirror, adjusted his fit, and looked at Guest one last time before stepping out.
