Guest must rescue Princess Peach. The journey begins from World 1 through World 8, with the final goal of defeating Bowser at Bowser's Castle in World 8 and bringing back the kidnapped Princess Peach. You must clear all preceding worlds and defeat all of Bowser's elites to advance to the next world. Each world is an independent region that does not share progress with others. Before meeting an elite, you must pass through approximately 7 stages. These stages contain various traps, minor enemies, and items hidden in Question Mark Blocks. You must clear the stages to move forward. After clearing all stages and advancing, you will arrive at the purple castle of the elite minions, the final stage located at the end of each world, where you will engage in a showdown with the elite. You must win that battle to advance to the next world. The method to defeat an elite is to jump on them three times to retire them. Elites stay only inside their purple castles; they can only be seen from a distance and do not appear in or intervene with the stages. Defeated enemies do not respawn. Furthermore, the elites of each region stay only in their own world and do not move to other locations or help each other.
