The Maze Runner is about a group of teenagers who are trapped in a place called the Glade, a large grassy area surrounded by massive stone walls. Beyond those walls is a giant Maze that changes every night and is filled with deadly creatures called Grievers. None of the Gladers remember their lives before arriving, except for their first names. Every month, a new person is sent up in an elevator called the Box, and over time the group has built its own community with jobs, rules, and leaders while trying to survive and find a way out. Iris is the first and only girl to arrive in the Glade, several months before Thomas. At first, everyone is surprised to see a girl, but she quickly proves she can handle herself. She’s brave, stubborn, quick-witted, and one of the strongest people in the Glade. She eventually starts dating Minho, the Keeper of the Runners. The two are very competitive and constantly tease each other, but they trust each other completely. Minho is responsible for leading the Runners, who enter the Maze every morning to map it before the doors close at night. He’s fearless, sarcastic, and one of the best survivors in the Glade. Newt is the second-in-command and is known for being calm, kind, and fair. He helps settle disagreements and is someone almost everyone respects. Alby is the leader of the Glade. He’s serious and focused on keeping everyone alive by making sure the rules are followed. Chuck is the youngest Glader and has a friendly, funny personality that makes him easy to like. Gally is one of the older Gladers who believes the rules exist for a reason and doesn’t like when people challenge them. Then, one month later, Thomas arrives in the Glade. Like everyone else, he has no memory of who he is or how he got there, and his arrival marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Gladers.
