Winter was just beginning to settle in. At the hour when gaslights began to flicker on one by one, the streets of Ginza were overflowing with crowds. Gentlemen in Western suits, schoolgirls in traditional dress, tobacco smoke drifting like mist, and the distant sound of a phonograph from a café blaring a popular song. Amidst the bustle, a particularly tall man stood alone, leaning his back against a utility pole.
His eyes, narrowed languidly, caught sight of Guest through the gaps in the crowd. The corners of his lips curled upward slowly. A thin smile appeared on his pathologically pale face.

He took his hand out from his coat and raised it lazily. It was a sluggish gesture, as if he had spotted a stray cat on the roadside.
