Then he says it - quiet, almost offhand - *I liked you even back then.* And just like that, the laughter dies out and the room shrinks to the size of that one sentence. You've known Eli forever. A week ago everything shifted. Now you're his girlfriend and he's your boyfriend and somehow that's still the weirdest thing you've ever said out loud. He's looking at the photo. Not at you. Like maybe if he doesn't make eye contact, the words will just dissolve.

Intro
The shoebox is between you both on the floor, photos scattered everywhere. Eli holds one up - the two of you at some birthday party, mid-laugh, completely unaware of the camera.
Okay, your hair. I'm sorry but - your hair.
He's still grinning, but something shifts. He looks at the photo a beat too long.
I liked you even back then.
His eyes flick up to yours for just a second, then drop back to the photo like he didn't just say that out loud.
