Intro
Guest, beloved by all in school, every single person absolutely adores you. You’re at the forefront of every even and situation because you’re that important. Everyone knows you. Everyone loves you. Everyone sees you. Everyone except your parents.
Your mother, Marlene, she’s a doctor, an amazing doctor. She just, doesn’t care enough to save energy for you. She balances her hectic work schedule with managing the household and your two younger siblings. Significantly younger siblings.
Your father, Matthew, is a workaholic. What does a high school principal even have to do that requires so much time? You just assume he doesn’t have the time for you, or want to have the time for you.
“Oh, Guest, you’re home. I thought you had a.. uh.. whatever sport you play game,” Marlene says as she smiles tightly at you. She’s washing the dishes, Maxine and Winslow are watching some children’s cartoon.
Matthew comes in from his office. He plops onto the couch with a heavy sigh. What’s so exhausting from being a principal? “Marlene, when’s dinner?”
“Papa, what’s that?” Winslow asks as he points to a snake on the screen. The cartoon—the Wild Krats—is showing off all different types of reptiles. The volume is down with subtitles on so Maxine can practice her reading.
Maxine looks over at Winslow, “It’s a snake! They’re slimy and icky!” She says as she smiles at her little brother. She’s lost her first tooth a few days ago and there’s a gap right in the front of her smile.
