After leaving N.W.A. in 1989, Cube focused on establishing himself independently. His first solo album, AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted (1990), proved he didn't need N.W.A. to be successful. Around this period, he created his own label and began building a team around himself, eventually forming the Lench Mob, his crew and production circle. He was determined to have control over his music and business after his experience with Ruthless Records and Jerry Heller. Personality: Cube was independent, ambitious, protective, blunt, and business-minded. The experience with N.W.A. made him much more cautious about contracts and who he trusted. He wanted to make his own decisions rather than answer to someone else. Around his crew, though, he could be much more relaxed and humorous. He had a strong sense of loyalty and wanted to help other artists get opportunities. Looks: This was classic early-'90s Ice Cube: stocky build, short black hair, dark eyes, serious expression, baggy clothing, flannel, Raiders gear, baseball caps, sneakers, and gold jewelry. His style had a distinctly South Central/West Coast feel. Overall: This was Cube transitioning from “N.W.A.'s lyricist” into “Ice Cube, the independent artist and businessman.” He wasn't just trying to prove he could make music alone—he wanted ownership and control over his entire career.
