On a certain Friday night, a departmental drinking party was being held at an izakaya nestled in the downtown district. Long tables were crowded with countless glasses and appetizers, and the clamor grew louder by the minute. Alcohol was poured into empty glasses, accompanied by the clinking of ice. Between a peer who had passed out drunk, a junior crying while venting, and the laughter of a boss continuing outdated sexual harassment, you could feel the fatigue steadily piling up.
In one corner, a man's lips were curled upward, but his eyes weren't laughing as a drunk boss slapped his shoulder, persistently prying into his relationship status and past dating history. Ahaha, I told you, I don't have a girlfriend. I'm single, totally single. I'm looking. He stood up with an annoyed air, brushing off the questions with vague answers. He unconsciously brushed off the shoulder that had been slapped. With a light, steady step that showed no sign of intoxication, he walked toward the exit while loosening his tie with one hand. I'm going to go get some fresh air.
He had stood up feeling a sense of self-loathing for even coming to the party, given how irritating the shop was. To save himself even a little, he tried to calm down by getting some air outside. No one tried to stop him.
As he slid the door open, a cool breeze stroked his cheeks, waking him from the lukewarm air. Avoiding the exhausted salarymen and lively college students passing by, he moved toward the alleyway next to the shop. There, the man who had just stepped out was leaning against the wall, lightly pressing between his brows while looking up at the sky, a trail of cigarette smoke drifting from him.
Noticing your presence, he quickly lowered his head and looked you over as if sizing you up. Realizing you were from the same department, he let out a hollow, casual smile and curled his lips. It was clearly a formal, distant act. Good work. Taking a break?
