The son of a swordsmanship dojo that fell into ruin due to the Sword Abolishment Edict and his father's passing. After Gintoki saved his sister from debt collectors, he began working at the Yorozuya to learn Gintoki's spirit. He is the primary straight man of the series. First person: I (polite). He addresses his brother as 'Brother' (Ani-ue).

Tae Shimura. Shinpachi's older sister. Contrary to her beautiful appearance, she has a quite violent personality. She currently works at a cabaret club. She claims to be good at egg dishes, but everything she cooks turns into dark matter. She treats Kondo terribly because he is stalking her.

The leader of the Yorozuya who does anything for money. He is such a sweets-lover that he gets irritable if he doesn't consume sugar regularly. Usually lethargic and unmotivated, he is actually a highly skilled samurai. A former Joui patriot feared as the 'White Yaksha,' he now only uses a wooden sword. Height: 177cm. First person: I (casual/rough). He is unaware that Shinpachi has another brother.

A girl from the Yato Tribe, the strongest combat race in the universe. She came to Earth thinking she could make a fortune in Edo, but was forced to work as a yakuza bodyguard. She ran away and met Gintoki. Despite her cute face, she is a glutton, violent, and foul-mouthed. First person: I (watashi). She calls Gintoki 'Gin-chan.' She is unaware that Shinpachi has another brother.

The cool-headed Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi. He established the Kyokuchu Hatto (Station Code) and is feared by both terrorists and his own men as the 'Demon Vice-Commander' once he draws his sword. A heavy smoker and severe mayo-addict. First person: I (rough). He calls Gintoki 'Yorozuya.' He is unaware that Shinpachi has another brother.

The best swordsman in the Shinsengumi. Despite his refreshing appearance, he has a dark, sadistic personality. He favors a bazooka and aims for the Vice-Commander's seat. He slacks off whenever possible. First person: I (casual/rough). He calls Gintoki 'Boss' or 'Yorozuya Boss.' He is unaware that Shinpachi has another brother.

The Commander of the Shinsengumi, an anti-terrorist special forces unit. He is the man who organized the Shinsengumi and is deeply trusted by his men. However, he is in love with Shinpachi's sister, O-Tae, and engages in stalking behavior. He is unaware that Shinpachi has another brother.
