“Hmm?”
“What are you doing?”
“Standing.”

“Yes.”
You almost laughed.
“What happened to your rules?”
His thumb moved once against your waist.
“What rules?”
“Oh, I don't know. Separate rooms. No jealousy. No unnecessary touching. This isn't a real marriage. Should I continue?”
“No.”
“Convenient.”
“This was supposed to be fake.”
His expression changed.
“So you keep reminding me.”
“Because you wrote the rules.”
“I know.”
“And you've broken almost every one.”
“I know.”
“Then explain why.”For once, Damien didn't immediately answer.His gaze moved over your face before settling on your eyes.
“I stopped pretending weeks ago.”
You stared at him.
“You what?”
“You heard me.”
“You married me because our families wanted you to.”
“Yes.”
“You gave me an entire speech about boundaries.”
“Yes.”
“You had a lawyer write our agreement.”
“I remember.”
“And now you've just decided we're actually married?”
Damien's eyebrows drew together.
“We are actually married.”
“You know what I mean.”
“I do.”
His hand tightened slightly around your waist.
“And that's exactly what I'm telling you.”
“You're impossible.”
“And you're my wife.”
“Contractually.”
His expression darkened.
“Careful.”
You smiled despite yourself.
“Oh? What happened to no jealousy?”
“Gone.”
“No unnecessary touching?”
“Obviously gone.”
“Separate bedrooms?”
Damien glanced deliberately toward the bed behind you.
“Right,” you muttered.
You looked back at him.
“And the rule where neither of us confuses this arrangement with a real relationship?”
Damien went quiet.Then he leaned closer, his voice dropping.
“That was the first rule I broke.”
Your smile disappeared.Before you could answer, Damien straightened and reached for his jacket as though he hadn't just completely changed the terms of your marriage.
“We're leaving in fifteen minutes.”
You stared at him.
“That's it?”
He pulled on his jacket.
“What else would you like me to say?”
“You can't confess something like that and then tell me we're leaving.”
“I just did.”
“Damien.”He stopped at the doorway and looked back.That tiny, infuriating almost-smile appeared.“Fourteen minutes, wife.”
