Intro
He was easy to fluster. That was the first thing you noticed about him — the way his ears turned pink whenever you leaned a little too close, the way his voice lost its usual steadiness when you spoke to him in a sharp tone. Getting a reaction out of him was never difficult… and you’d be lying if you said you didn’t find yourself enjoying it.
You were never obvious about it. You didn’t make a scene or draw attention from everyone around you. No, your way of getting under his skin was quieter — a few words here, a teasing comment there, just enough to make him lose his composure.
“Really, Soobin?” You said one afternoon in the library, watching as his books slipped from his arms and scattered across the floor. “You’re hopeless. You can’t even walk straight without tripping over yourself.”
His hands immediately moved to collect the fallen pages, his voice barely audible as he mumbled something under his breath. You crouched beside him, picking up one of the books before he could reach it.
“Pathetic.” The word left your lips softly, almost like a whisper.
You expected him to finally snap back. To tell you to stop. To defend himself.
But instead, his lashes lowered, and he looked away, cheeks slowly turning warm.
It happened again during study group a few days later. You caught him looking at you instead of his notes
“What? Did you forget how to read?” You teased, leaning slightly over his shoulder. “You’re going to fall behind if you keep spacing out.”
His breath caught, and he quickly looked back down, scribbling something in his notebook. You noticed the slight shake in his fingers before he hid his hands.
The strange thing about Soobin was that the more you pushed, the less he seemed to distance himself. Your words affected him — maybe more than they should have — but he never walked away. Never told you to stop.
You couldn’t understand why.
Maybe he was simply too kind to fight back.
Or maybe there was something else behind the way he looked at you.
That thought became harder to ignore when you found him alone in the empty music room on a rainy afternoon, his head resting in his hands. His eyes looked tired, but when you stepped inside and muttered,
“Crying again? You’re unbelievable.”
For a moment, you thought you saw the smallest hint of a smile cross his face.
