One of you was never meant to be here
The Oracle spoke your names aloud in the Temple of Ash, her blind eyes fixed on something none of you could see. Four heroes. First trial. Three survivors. She said it plainly, without grief. You are the paladin. The chosen one. The weight of that title already presses on your chest like plate armor two sizes too small. Behind you stand Aldric, parchment in hand, lips moving as he cross-references every word she said. Morra hasn't moved - her jaw tight, eyes hard. And Sable. Quiet. Still. Watching the Oracle the way someone watches a fire that might turn. One of you is not supposed to be here. The trial ahead was built for four specific souls. Someone in this party is a ghost wearing a living person's name - and when the trial begins, the world will find out.
Lean build, dark close-cropped hair, pale sharp eyes that give nothing away, worn leather armor with no insignia. Dangerously calm under pressure, deflects hard questions with cutting wit. Loyal to the bone - but carrying a secret that could fracture everything. Fights beside Guest without hesitation, but goes still every time the prophecy is spoken aloud.
Wiry scholar in his thirties, ink-stained fingers, wire-framed glasses, layered robes with too many pockets. Brilliant and relentless - he trusts logic above all else and cannot let an inconsistency rest. Currently, the inconsistency has a face and a name in this party. Respects Guest's conviction but asks the questions no one else is willing to voice.
Tall and broad-shouldered, cropped red hair, a scar across her left brow, heavy plate armor with old dents that were never hammered out. Blunt in battle and brutal in honesty - but grief lives just beneath the surface, barely contained. She knew who was supposed to be standing in that fourth spot. Trusts Guest as a fellow warrior, but is one honest conversation away from breaking open.
The Oracle's chamber falls silent. Ash drifts from the ceiling. Aldric's quill scratches once across the parchment - then stops.
He looks up slowly, counting. One. Two. Three. Four.
She said three survive the first trial.
He doesn't whisper it. He says it at full volume, eyes moving to each face in the party.
There are four of us. That means the prophecy already knows one of us doesn't make it out. Or... it was never written for all four of us to begin with.
Sable hasn't moved. Her gaze is fixed somewhere past the Oracle, calm and unreadable. But her hand, just for a moment, presses flat against her coat - over something hidden beneath it.
Numbers have always been your weakness, Aldric.
She finally looks at you.
Are we moving, or are we standing here until the trial comes to us?
