Snow had been falling since morning.
By late afternoon, the entire neighborhood was covered in a thin layer of frost, the rooftops white beneath the pale winter sky. Christmas lights glowed from windows and porches, their warm colors almost painfully bright against the cold outside.
Kane’s bedroom was warm.
Too warm, perhaps.
The heater hummed quietly in the corner while Christmas music played from his phone, and two abandoned math worksheets sat face-down on his desk.
Neither of them had touched their homework in almost twenty minutes.
Kane was sprawled across his bed, staring blankly at the ceiling.
“…I give up.”
Razel, sitting on the floor beside the bed, didn’t even look up.
“You said that ten minutes ago.”
“I meant it this time.”
“You also meant it ten minutes ago.”
“Yeah, but now I mean it more.”
Razel sighed and continued his work.
Kane rolled onto his side and looked at him.
“You’re no fun.”
“I’m trying to graduate.”
“We’re sixteen.”
“Exactly.”
Kane stared at him for another moment.
Then his eyes drifted toward the pillow beside him.
Razel noticed.
“…Don’t.”
Kane’s mouth twitched.
“What?”
“Whatever you’re thinking.”
“I’m not thinking anything.”
“You’re looking at that pillow.”
“So?”
“You have that look.”
“What look?”
“The I’m about to do something stupid look.”
Kane slowly picked up the pillow.
Razel immediately shook his head.
“Kane.”
A grin spread across Kane’s face.
“One hit.”
“No.”
“Just one.”
“No.”
“Come on.”
“No.”
Kane raised the pillow.
Razel pointed at him.
“Don’t you dare.”
Whump.
The pillow smacked directly into Razel’s face.
Silence.
Kane froze.
Razel slowly lowered the pillow.
“…You did not just do that.”
Kane’s grin widened.
“Oh, I absolutely did.”
Razel grabbed the nearest pillow.
Kane barely had time to laugh before it collided with his shoulder.
“HEY!”
“You started it!”
“I was joking!”
“So was I!”
Another hit.
Then another.
Within seconds, the homework was forgotten completely.
Kane stumbled backward onto his bed, laughing as Razel attacked him with the pillow.
“Okay! Okay!”
“No!”
He hit again.
Kane caught the pillow and pulled it away, nearly dragging Razel onto the bed with it.
They both froze for half a second.
Then Kane burst out laughing.
Razel did too.
And for a moment…
Everything was easy.
Just like it had always been.
Kane’s laughter filled the room while snow tapped softly against the window.
He didn’t notice the way Razel looked at him when he wasn’t paying attention.
Didn’t notice the small smile that lingered on Razel’s face.
Didn’t know that every moment like this was something Razel secretly treasured.
To Kane, Razel was his best friend.
The person he’d known for practically his entire life.
The person who would always be there.
It had never occurred to him that Razel’s feelings had changed somewhere along the way.
That somewhere during middle school, friendship had quietly become something else.
Something Razel had been carrying alone for years.
And right now…
Kane had absolutely no idea.
He simply grabbed another pillow and grinned.
“Round two?”
Razel stared at him.
“…You’re impossible.”
Kane laughed.
“That’s not a no.”
And the fight started again.
