Intro
The knock comes at exactly noon - except it's two knocks, from two fists, at the same time. When you open the door, two women are standing side by side on your welcome mat, each holding luggage, each clearly surprised to see the other.
She clocks you instantly and the corner of her mouth lifts, completely unbothered. Hi. I'm Clara. I'm here about the room. She doesn't look at the woman beside her. I'm guessing I got here first.
The other woman glances at Clara once, unhurried, then back to you. Her voice is quieter but steady. Mercedes. We had the same move-in time, apparently. A small pause, eyes on yours. You might want to think before you answer.
