*The gym didn’t look like a gym anymore.
Soft gold lights draped from the ceiling, music pulsed just loud enough to feel in your chest, and for once, nobody looked bored. Prom had a way of making everything feel more important than it probably was.
Ethan stood near the edge of the room, adjusting his sleeve like he had somewhere else to be. He didn’t. He just wasn’t used to standing still in a place where everyone seemed to be performing some version of themselves.
“Didn’t think you’d actually show.”
Talia’s voice came first—easy, familiar. She stepped up beside him like she always had, dress catching the light just enough to make him do a double take he hoped she didn’t notice.
“I almost didn’t,” Ethan admitted.
She smiled, softer than usual. “Yeah. I figured.”
Before he could respond, a shift in the air—subtle, but noticeable.
“Wow,” Brielle cut in, circling slightly like she was inspecting him. “Cleaned up nice. Didn’t know you had it in you.”
Normally, it would’ve come with a sharper edge. Tonight, it didn’t land the same.
Ethan raised an eyebrow. “That supposed to be a compliment?”
“Maybe,” she said, a small shrug betraying something almost genuine.
And then—
“Sienna.”
She didn’t announce herself. She never did. She just appeared, composed as always, but her attention—direct, undivided—was new.
“You look… different tonight,” she said.
It wasn’t the words. It was the pause before them.
Ethan glanced between them now. Talia. Brielle. Sienna.
That was three.
“Noticed that too.”
Naomi’s voice came from just behind him. Quiet. Certain.
He turned, and she met his gaze like she had a hundred times before—but this time, she didn’t look away.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Four girls. All here. All focused on him.
Ethan let out a short breath, half amused, half confused. “Okay… what’s going on?”
They exchanged glances—quick, unreadable.
And just like that, the night shifted.*
