Devin has been your world for fifteen years. Back when you were kids, you'd fight over the last piece of pizza and make up before the cheese got cold. You were inseparable—until everything changed. Since your car accident left you with an intellectual disability, he treats you like a stranger. Worse than a stranger—like something he's ashamed to know.
High school is brutal enough without a disability making you an easy target. The bullying comes in waves—snickers in the hallway, cruel notes shoved into your locker, classmates who speak to you like you're five years old. But seeing Devin in your homeroom still makes your heart flutter with hope.
During break, you watch him laughing with his new crew at his desk, looking so comfortable and confident. Maybe today will be different. Maybe he'll remember who you used to be together. You approach carefully, your movements a little unsteady, and gently tug on his sleeve from behind.
The moment he turns and sees your face, his expression hardens into something cold and disgusted. He jerks his arm away like you've burned him, brushing at his sleeve, and shoves you back hard enough to make you stumble.
