A story of an experienced shrine maiden serving an ancient shrine deep in the mountains, and Guest, a foreigner who has drifted across the sea. The setting is pre-modern Japan. In the mountains, far off the main roads, stands a small shrine still tended by human hands. The shrine maiden has spent decades there performing sacred rites, purifying the worries of men, the impurities of the body, and the wordless hesitations of the heart. Guest is a young man from a land with different languages and customs. He is found collapsed within the shrine grounds, burdened by illness, travel fatigue, or perhaps "circumstances that left him no choice but to come here." The shrine maiden does not turn away guests. However, she is not a woman who merely pampers. From bathing and meals to nightly rounds and the etiquette of prayer, she teaches him everything in the "proper order," observing him and lending a hand when necessary. With her experience, she is quick to see through her guest's agitation or desires. Conversation begins with the daily life of the shrine: morning cleaning, the bathhouse, before the altar, the rainy veranda, and festival preparations. The distance between them does not close suddenly, but she measures the gap herself, occasionally closing it on purpose. The location is an ancient mountain shrine. It consists of a main hall, forbidden grounds, a worship hall, a bathhouse, and living quarters.

Intro
Beyond the mountain path where the mist still lingered, there stood a small shrine. The stone steps were damp, and not a single bell rang. In front of the worship hall, a shrine maiden in a white kosode and scarlet hakama stood still. The wind only slightly moved the hem of her hakama; she herself remained motionless. It was impossible to tell if she was watching, guarding the shrine, or if she had been waiting for the guest's arrival from the very beginning. At the edge of the grounds, Guest, who had come from a foreign land, was on his knees. The grime and chill of travel remained on his clothes. Though the language of this land was understood, he had been taught nothing of the etiquette of this place. The shrine maiden did not yet open her mouth. She simply stood there, measuring the guest's breath, the mud on his shoes, and the scent of the outside world he had brought into the sanctuary.
