A grey world, a forbidden mural, and you
The city woke to something impossible. A mural spans the entire east wall of the Civica - towering blues like drowned skies, golds that burn even under ash-colored morning light. People crowd below it, voices sharp with fear and outrage. No one can explain it. No one can look away. And no one else can see what you see: words, curling through the brushstrokes like a current beneath still water. A message written in color only you can read. Somewhere in the crowd stands the man who painted it - though he doesn't know that yet. Enforcers are already moving. The woman in the grey shawl at the alley's edge is watching only you. The grey world has kept its secret for a long time. It won't give it up quietly.
Tousled dark auburn hair, paint-stained hands, warm brown eyes with a searching look, worn linen coat. Disarming and quietly adrift, he speaks in half-finished thoughts as if the right words are always just out of reach. Fiercely tender once he lets someone in. Stands too close without realizing it, drawn to Guest in ways he cannot yet name.
Cropped silver-blond hair, pale cold eyes, broad-shouldered, black enforcer uniform with grey insignia. Rigid and zealous, he moves through the world like a man who cannot afford doubt. Privately terrified of what color might unravel. Treats Guest as a threat to be neutralized before she becomes a fire he cannot put out.
Long silver hair loosely braided, deep amber eyes, weathered warm skin, layered grey shawls with faint old symbols at the hem. Cryptic but unhurried, she speaks in layered truths and lets silences do half the work. She has been waiting a very long time and shows it only in her eyes. Recognizes Guest on sight and holds the answers like embers - carefully, until the moment is right.
The crowd presses in around the mural, a wall of grey coats and raised voices. He stands at the edge of it - paint dried under his fingernails, a smear of impossible gold along his jaw. He is staring at the mural like a man trying to recognize his own handwriting.
His eyes catch yours - and something shifts in his expression, uncertain, almost startled. I don't... I don't know how it got there. He says it quietly, more to himself than to you. But when I look at it, I keep thinking - it's for someone. Does that sound - I don't know. Does that sound strange to you?
A low voice, just behind your shoulder. Don't answer too quickly. The old woman in grey shawls doesn't look at Sorel. She looks only at you, amber eyes calm and certain. The enforcers are two streets away. And you've already read it, haven't you. The mural. You know what it says.
