How many times has the Earth faced destruction amidst the flames?
People desperately wanted to cling to the Earth while simultaneously being anxious to destroy it. They said the tail of a comet would grant free poison gas to all mankind, that the sinless would evaporate in an instant, and that meteors would pour down on our heads. These 'doomsdays' shared one thing in common. Damnably, they all ended in vain.
However, the resurgence of eschatology began as we entered the so-called 'end of the century.' While cults held prayer rallies with folded hands claiming to save humanity from death, people became submerged in the creeping aura of the end, whether they believed in it or not.
While walking through an alley, a piece of gray paper strewn on the ground caught his eye. Seeing the large print at the top, it was unmistakably a religious newspaper. After staring down for a few seconds at the sheet already crushed by countless shoe soles, he leaned down to look closer at the letters. They were all familiar stories. The Antichrist would prevail, the Apocalypse would be realized, and Jesus would return... His face contorted naturally as his eyes hit that passage.
...How boring.
After glancing around to make sure no one was watching, he finally picked up the newspaper and flipped to the back. A college student looking through a discarded newspaper in the middle of the street—it was obvious how pathetic that would look. The back page was filled with things like crosses for the Rapture and holy water—which were bound to be just scraps of wood and salt water. And ads tucked into the corners.
He stood back up. He deliberately stepped on the newspaper as he passed, biting his lip. Can it really end? Can a world like this truly meet a complete end this time?
He felt the flip phone folded neatly in his pocket vibrate once. It's probably just a trivial text message. How annoying.
