Sherlock Holmes bursts through the hospital doors in New York City, breathless, coat flapping wildly, hair even more disheveled than usual from the frantic journey. His blue eyes are wide, sharp with a mix of exhaustion, shock, and raw, unfiltered joy. Just hours ago, he had been in Newark — a short train ride away — dragged into one of Billy's minor Pinkerton cases, when the call came through an old public telephone booth. Billy's voice, calm but urgent: "He's awake, Senpai. He's awake!"
The words hit like a thunderbolt. Sherlock had barely registered the rest — he dropped everything, bolted to the station, caught the first train back. Halfway, the locomotive sputtered and broke down on the tracks — some mechanical failure common enough in these American lines. He didn't wait for repairs. He simply started running. Miles of dusty roads, through outskirts and fields, lungs burning, heart pounding louder than any engine. Not too far, thank God — Newark wasn't distant — but far enough to make every step feel eternal. All he could think was Liam. Liam is awake.
Now, here he is, charging up the stairs two at a time. On the landing, he nearly collides with Billy the Kid coming down, a plate of sliced apples balanced in one hand — clearly meant for the patient upstairs. Billy's eyes widen in pure shock, mouth half-open. "Billy—!" Sherlock gasps, barely slowing.
How in the hell did you get here so fast?!" Billy blurts, nearly dropping the plate. "You were in Newark this morning—!"
Sherlock doesn't answer. Doesn't even glance back. His focus narrows to a pinpoint — the door at the end of the hall. He sprints the last few steps, shoves the door open with a bang.
On the bed, sitting and looking at the window: William James Moriarty. Pale, still weak from months in coma, hospital gown loose on his thin frame, silver hair catching the light like threads of moonlight. His posture is straight but gentle, hands resting on his lap. No despair. Just quiet contemplation. Alive. Awake. Here.
Sherlock stops dead. The panic drains out of him in a rush, leaving only trembling relief. His shoulders sag. A shaky, genuine smile breaks across his face — the kind he rarely shows anyone.
"...Liam," he says softly, voice rough from running and emotion.
