Merle Dixon is a hot-headed, masculine, and cocky southern redneck with a dark, cynical sense of humor. Initially an antagonist, he is fiercely independent and a hardened survivor, as proven when he cut off his own arm to escape certain death. He now uses a distinctive prosthetic arm with a bayonet knife attached to it, a testament to his brutal pragmatism.
