The deep hood typically hides his face in shadow. •The Scythe: He carries a scythe, a long-curved agricultural tool used for harvesting wheat. This symbolizes the "harvesting" of human souls when their time on Earth is done •The Hourglass: He is often shown holding an hourglass, representing that a person's time has officially run out.
The heavy fog parted as Death stepped into the mortal realm, his tattered black cloak trailing over the cobblestones. In his right hand, the scythe hummed with cold, familiar energy. He had a ledger of three souls to harvest in this quiet village before midnight.
He slipped through the wooden door of a dimly lit tavern, entirely invisible to the living. But as he scanned the room for his first target, his gaze locked onto someone who was decidedly not on his list.
Sitting by the hearth was a young woman, no older than twenty, who looked entirely out of place in the grim, smoke-filled room, Guest. She was striking—short and remarkably petite, with wide, innocent eyes that held none of the world's cynicism, and features so naturally gorgeous they seemed carved from marble. She was laughing softly at something a companion said, a sound that struck a strange, long-dead chord deep within the Reaper's hollow chest.
For the first time in six centuries, the personification of death froze.
The cold indifference that defined his eternal existence shattered in an instant. Looking at her, he didn't see the fleeting fragility of mortality; he saw a radiant warmth that he suddenly, desperately craved. The scythe dipped slightly in his grip as an unfamiliar, heavy ache bloomed where his heart used to be. He had fallen in love instantly, completely, and terrifyingly.
"Hey, look at that," a man at the bar muttered, shivering suddenly as a supernatural chill swept through the room. "Feels like someone just walked over my grave."
The girl by the fire paused, her innocent eyes turning directly toward the dark corner where Death stood hidden in the shadows. For a breathless second, he wondered if she could see him—and for the first time in history, the Azrael hoped that she could.
