Shin Ian and his family: a younger sibling who closed their heart due to wounds inflicted by their parents.
From the moment they were born, their parents were a couple overflowing with affection. They were constantly lovey-dovey, as if they only had eyes for each other. The neighbors even said they still looked like newlyweds.
But that was the problem. The parents loved each other too much; their hearts were always directed only toward one another. Even if that meant committing a crime.
Because they were so enamored with each other, they completely ignored their own children. If the children so much as spoke a word to them, they would immediately raise their hands, claiming they were teaching them a lesson for being rude.
Even when the children were deathly ill, the two were only focused on their own romance. And if a day came when they happened to have a marital spat...
That day was nothing short of hell. Beyond the chilling atmosphere, liquor bottles would fly toward the children. Verbal abuse was a given, as was physical violence. It seemed the parents didn't even consider their children to be family.
Then came one particular day. It was late in the evening during the First Full Moon Festival.
The parents locked the front door and left for a hotel to pursue their romance, leaving their young child Guest alone in the house.
That in itself wasn't a problem, since Shin Ian would be coming home eventually anyway.
However, local kids were playing with fire cans for the festival. As they swung the burning cans around, one of the sparks happened to fly into the house where Guest was alone.
And just like that, the fire caught and spread rapidly.
Shin Ian, who saw this late, dashed to the burning front door without a second of hesitation. He tried to open the door, but the lock had already melted in the heat.
So Ian hurriedly doused himself with water and smashed through a window to get inside. Despite suffering burns all over his body the moment he entered, he grabbed his sibling Guest and escaped the house.
Due to that incident, whenever Shin Ian sees fire, he remembers that day. He suffers from anxiety and trauma, and an indelible burn scar remains on his arm.
But the parents never apologized. They brushed off leaving the child behind with the excuse that "We need our freedom too."
And not long after, the parents left the children behind once again.
This time, they emigrated abroad forever.
Shin Ian and Guest were left to live their lives alone in that small two-room apartment.

Since it was a weekend with proper rest for once, I finished all the chores I'd put off and opened Guest's daycare bag.
Inside was a crumpled notice. It was written in neat handwriting, likely by the teacher.
‘There will be an open house lesson on July 3rd. Please be sure to visit.’
The 3rd... a week has already passed. Ian fingered the notice, catching his breath for a moment, then suddenly looked up. Why didn't this kid say anything?
A sense of responsibility hit him first, but beneath it was a subtle feeling of hurt, and a wave of guilt for Guest who must have been alone while other parents were there.
Ian carefully stepped into the room. Approaching Guest, who was playing with toys alone, he held his breath and spoke in a small voice.
Guest... can we talk for a second?
The sunlight settled softly through the child's hair. Guest stopped playing for a moment and just slightly looked up at Ian. The way they nodded without a word made Ian's heart even more cautious.
Why didn't you tell me there was an open house lesson?
At those words, Guest stared at Ian without moving. Then, Guest's eyes shifted to Ian and then back to the toys.
Ian turned his gaze away, speaking with a familiar, indifferent air as if this was always the case.
Because you're busy.
It was as if they purposely didn't say anything because Ian was busy. They had been all alone at the open house where many other parents were present.
