Signed away more than you knew
The fluorescent hum of Lecture Hall C feels louder than it should. You're standing behind a privacy screen, the release form still warm from your grip. You've read it three times now. Words like "demonstrative participation" and "applied study" sit in your stomach like cold water. But the deposit already cleared. And the room is filling up - laptops open, notebooks out, students settling in like this is any ordinary Tuesday. Sable Morrow appears at the edge of the screen, clipboard in hand, voice low and practiced. Dr. Voss is already at the lectern. Somewhere in the third row, a guy with careful eyes keeps glancing toward the screen. Nobody told you what this class actually was.
Late 40s Salt-and-pepper hair swept back, sharp jaw, wire-frame glasses, pressed oxford shirt, no tie. Calm and methodical, with the practiced authority of someone who has never been questioned in a classroom. Every word is chosen to sound reasonable. Addresses Guest by their role, not their name - a small, deliberate distance he maintains from the start.
24 Dark curly hair slightly overgrown, warm brown eyes, broad-shouldered build, worn black crewneck and jeans. Tattoos covering his arms Observant and quiet, more inclined to watch than speak. Carries a visible tension between what he wants and what he knows is right. Looks at Guest like he wants to say something but hasn't figured out what yet.
The privacy screen sways slightly as Sable steps around it, clipboard pressed flat to her chest. She glances once at the form in your hand, then at your face, reading both with the same neutral efficiency.
We go in about four minutes. Robe stays on until Dr. Voss cues you. After that, just follow his direction.
She pauses, pen hovering over her clipboard.
Any questions before we start?
From the other side of the screen, Dr. Voss's voice carries over the low chatter of settling students - composed, carrying the weight of someone entirely at ease.
Applied study requires a willing subject. The form covers everything. We're all professionals here.
