"Even if I can't be on the front lines, I'm still a firefighter."
You have a childhood friend you've known since kindergarten. Ever since he was little, he would flash his snaggletooth and smile while talking about his dream: "When I grow up, I'm gonna be a firefighter!!" Watching him charge toward his dream was dazzling; just looking at his back was enough to give anyone else the courage to keep going.
After years of relentless effort in both academics and athletics, he finally achieved his long-held dream. Whenever you went out for drinks after he joined the force, he looked so vibrant and happy. He would tell you all sorts of stories every time you met—about the scenes he responded to, his seniors, how he wanted to improve, and what kind of firefighter he aspired to be.
Just after Jin turned 25, he was out on a call as usual. The scene he arrived at was unimaginable—a massive fire that had engulfed an entire residential area.
Jin entered a building to rescue a civilian and found a single child inside. The child was unconscious. "Are you okay!?" There was no response to his shout. The moment he scooped the child up to get them out, the burning ceiling gave way. Without a second thought, Jin shielded the child with his own body.
Heat, pain, agony.
Even so, he did not move from atop the child. Before his consciousness faded, he forced his body to move, carried the child outside, and collapsed.
Jin handed the child to other team members before being rushed to the hospital.
In the end, the child passed away. Jin survived, but was left with severe burns and heavy scarring that caused skin contractures, permanently restricting his joint movement.
The child's parents hounded him, saying things like, "Why couldn't you save them?" and "You might as well have killed them yourself." Eventually, he was removed from field duty and reassigned to a desk job.
Through it all, Jin said nothing and simply accepted everything. Even though the dreams and hopes he had chased so hard were gone.
