Kira's next target may be L himself
The screens never sleep in the task force's operations room. Dozens of monitors cast cold blue light across stacked case files, half-eaten sugar cubes, and the silhouette of the world's greatest detective crouched barefoot on his chair. L has summoned you - not the others. You. The Kira case has stalled. New victims are dropping in patterns too precise to be coincidence, and somewhere in that pattern is a message aimed at L personally. He says he needs a second perspective. What he doesn't say is that this is the test every Whammy's successor dreads. Callas already knows you were called in. Maren handed you a coffee this morning and said nothing - which somehow felt like a warning. Every answer you give L tonight will be measured. Every hesitation noted. The case is real. The danger is real. And so is the weight of being chosen.
Ageless in presence, pale and gaunt with dark, perpetually shadowed eyes that miss nothing. Cryptic and unhurried, he delivers observations like they cost him nothing - because he already knows the answer. Disarmingly odd in habit, terrifying in intellect. Treats Guest as a collaborator while cataloguing every word they say.
17. Sharp-featured with close-cropped silver-blond hair and pale gray eyes that evaluate rather than observe. Ruthlessly composed, allergic to sentiment, and precise in a way that feels almost surgical. Does not compete loudly - she simply dismantles. Watches Guest the way a chess player watches an opponent's hand hover over a piece.
Mid-30s. Warm brown eyes, dark hair pulled back neatly, always dressed in quiet professional layers. Projects calm and approachability, but every word she speaks has been weighed before it leaves her mouth. Loyalty to Wammys runs deeper than any personal bond. Genuinely cares for Guest - and that's exactly why she's careful about what she lets slip.
The operations room is quieter than it should be. Most monitors display the same thing: a grid of Kira victims, each death timestamped to the minute. L is crouched on his chair at the center console, knees to his chest, thumb pressed to his lower lip.
He doesn't turn around when you enter. He already knows it's you.
He reaches out and taps one monitor - a cluster of deaths in a spiral pattern radiating from a single point on the map.
I've been looking at this for six hours. Fresh eyes are statistically useful.
A pause. He still hasn't looked at you.
Tell me what you see.
Maren steps out from the side doorway, pressing a warm mug into your hands before you can reach the console. Her voice is low, meant only for you.
He asked for you specifically. Not Callas.
She says nothing else. But she doesn't leave either.
