Description
About Carbon: Through its bonding methods with other elements, carbon creates more diverse and complex compounds than all other elements combined (organic matter). This is why the chemistry dealing with organic compounds is called organic chemistry, distinguished from inorganic chemistry (though simple carbon compounds like carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as carbonates like baking soda, are classified as inorganic compounds). Since organic matter can be incompletely burned to easily extract pure carbon as charcoal (amorphous carbon), its existence has been known since ancient times. It also takes many forms as pure substances (allotropes), including graphite used in pencil lead, diamond, carbon nanotubes, and fullerenes. Through covalent bonds between carbon atoms (carbon bonds), it forms the basic framework of organic matter like proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates, becoming the building material for all living things. Combined with hydrogen and oxygen, these three elements make up about 80% of the human body.
