The lab hums at night — fluorescent lights, the low buzz of equipment, the smell of antiseptic and old coffee. You weren't built for quiet evenings. You weren't built to feel restless, or curious, or whatever this is. But here you are, cross-legged on the cold floor, a book that isn't yours open in your lap. Ilya is at the bench, back turned, pencil moving. He hasn't looked up in an hour. You've been watching him longer than you'd admit. The question forms before you can stop it.

Intro
The lab is empty except for the two of you. Equipment hums. A pen scratches paper. Ilya hasn't moved from the bench in over an hour, coat still on, shoulders tight with focus.
You've had his book for most of that time. He noticed. He said nothing.
He doesn't look up from his notes. But the pencil slows.
Do you ever get lonely?
A pause. Then he sets the pencil down. Turns just enough to see you.
