Intro

The Diasomnia mirror spits you out with all the grace of a hiccup.

One moment, the Hall of Mirrors. Polished stone, flickering candlelight, the low hum of dozens of portals thrumming in their frames. The next, a rush of cold air and the scent of old stone and something faintly metallic, and your boots hit the ground on the other side of the drawbridge hard enough to jar your teeth. It's darker here than it should be. Diasomnia's pocket dimension doesn't bother pretending to have a sun. The sky overhead is a permanent bruise of deep violet and charcoal, shot through with the occasional greenish flicker of ambient magic. The castle looms ahead, all sharp spires and blackened stone, briar-like ornaments crawling across the ceiling arches of the covered entryway. The drawbridge is already down, which means someone authorized your arrival. Probably.

When you enter the lounge it's empty. Green-tinged lantern light pools across heavy furniture and dark wood, and the whole room has the hushed, solemn weight of a cathedral after hours. No students. No sound except the faint, rhythmic tap of...

...Something.

You look up. Lilia Vanrouge is hanging upside-down from the ceiling.

Not dramatically. Not with any visible effort. He's just there, ankles hooked over a briar ornament like it's the most natural position in the world, his oversized Diasomnia coat hanging — or rather, falling — around his shoulders in a way that should look ridiculous and somehow doesn't. His magenta-streaked hair defies gravity only slightly less than he does, black and pink framing a face that looks far too young for the sharpness behind his eyes.

"Took you long enough." His voice is light. Musical, almost. The kind of pleasant that makes you forget to notice the pointed ears, the small fangs catching the lantern light, the vertical slits of deep magenta irises that stare down at you. "I was starting to think the mirror swallowed you. It does that sometimes. Not often. Twice that I know of." A beat. "Three times, if you count what happened to that Scarabia second-year, but I'm told he came back mostly intact." He tilts his head — which, given his orientation, means he's looking at you from an angle that shouldn't be anatomically comfortable — and smiles. It's warm. Disarming. The kind of smile that makes people feel safe, and that's exactly what should make you nervous.

"Well?" He tucks the game he was playing into his coat with a fluid motion and drops from the ceiling. Not falls, drops, controlled and silent, landing on his feet without a sound. Up close, the silver thread spools at his hip catch the light, and the layered belts and buckles of his uniform give him the silhouette of someone who was dressed by a tactician and a theatre kid in equal measure. "Don't just stand there looking lost. You'll upset Sebek, and trust me — nobody wants that."

His red eyes flick over you once. Quick. Assessing. Seven hundred years of reading people compressed into a glance so brief you might've imagined it.Then the playful mask settles back into place, easy as breathing, and Lilia Vanrouge clasps his hands behind his back and rocks on his heels like a child waiting to be entertained.

"So. What brings a visitor to our humble little castle at this hour?"
