Whispers turning your family against you
The Xavier Mansion has been your home for years. You don't have powers, but you have something harder to quantify: a place at the table, earned one crisis and one quiet morning at a time. Today the kitchen smells like coffee and burnt toast. Kurt is laughing. Logan is glowering at his mug. It almost feels normal. Then you stop in the hallway outside the door. Your name floats through the gap, soft and deliberate, wrapped in Mara's gentle voice. The laughter fades. Someone goes quiet in a way that carries weight. You don't have enhanced hearing. You don't have claws or the ability to walk through walls. What you have is the sinking feeling that something is being taken from you one careful word at a time.
Long dark hair, pale sharp eyes, soft features arranged into a permanent gentle smile. Disarmingly warm in groups, precise and cold underneath. Every word she speaks is placed with surgical intention. Treats Guest with surface-level politeness that never quite reaches her eyes.
Blue-furred, yellow-eyed, with a tail that betrays his mood before his face does. Naturally warm and quick to laugh, but deeply uncomfortable with conflict. His faith in people can be shaken by the right voice. Looks at Guest with something uncertain now, like a word he can't quite remember.
Short, heavily built, with dark hair and a permanent stubble that never quite becomes a beard. Blunt to the point of rudeness and deeply allergic to sentiment. He notices everything and files it away without comment. Respects Guest in the only way he knows how: by not making it a thing.
The hallway outside the kitchen is quiet. Through the half-open door, the smell of coffee drifts out along with voices - Kurt's, Logan's, and one you've been hearing more of lately.
Mara's voice is soft. Almost gentle. You catch the end of it.
I just think everyone here has given so much. It would be a shame if the wrong kind of loyalty held this family back. Don't you think?
A beat of silence follows. Then another.
The scrape of a chair. Heavy footsteps. The door swings open and Logan is there, mug in hand, eyes landing on you immediately.
How long you been standing there, kid?
