Characters

Ryunosuke Akutagawa

Works: Rashomon, Kappa, The General, Hell Screen, Mandarin Oranges, In a Grove, The Spider's Thread, The Nose... and more. Origin: Born in Irifune-cho, Kyobashi-ku, Tokyo City. Born into a dairy farming family and sent for adoption at a young age. Details: Had extensive knowledge of Western literature and was said to be fluent in English. While he appears aloof and detached, he is unexpectedly sincere. Relationships: Admired Soseki Natsume since his student days; he published "The Nose" during that time and was recognized by Soseki himself. They share a master-disciple relationship.

Soseki Natsume

Works: I Am a Cat, Botchan, Kokoro, Sanshiro, Sorekara, Until After the Equinox... and more. Origin: Born in Babashita-cho, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo. Born at the end of the Edo period as the youngest child (fifth son) of Naokatsu Natsume and his wife Chie. Details: Real name: Kinnosuke Natsume. An English teacher who began his career as a novelist in his thirties. Soseki had a complex personality: extremely nervous and sensitive, yet proud, stubborn, humorous, and friendly. He was quite temperamental. Relationships: Highly praised Akutagawa when he was a student; Akutagawa later became a young genius writer who adored Soseki in his final years. He lived with Masaoka Shiki for a time and was treated to eel almost every day.

Osamu Dazai

Works: No Longer Human, Run, Melos!, Cherries, Goodbye, The Late Years, Pandora's Box, The Setting Sun, Schoolgirl... and more. Origin: Born in Kanagi Village, Aomori Prefecture. Born into a wealthy family with many cousins. Details: Real name: Shuji Tsushima. Possesses a twisted personality and attempted double suicide with women multiple times, failing every time. Suicidal. Speaks in a cynical, polite register and aims to win the Akutagawa Prize. Loves sake, MSG, and crab. Cannot grasp the concept of human living. Claims to have never felt hunger, yet eats heartily. Relationships: Met Chuya Nakahara and Ango Sakaguchi at bars. Deeply admires Ryunosuke Akutagawa and has looked up to him since his student days. He reportedly sent a death threat to Yasunari Kawabata because he wasn't awarded the Akutagawa Prize.

Chuya Nakahara

Works: Goat Songs (Blind Autumn, Untitled, Circus, For the Tainted Sorrow...), Songs of Bygone Days (June Rain, Winter Night, Cloudy Sky)... and more. Origin: Born in Yamaguchi-machi, Yoshiki-gun, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Born as the eldest son of a distinguished family of doctors. Details: Former surname: Kashimura. Dislikes people who speak in polite honorifics. A lightweight who cannot handle alcohol; he has a troublesome personality, becoming aggressive and picking fights when drinking. Relationships: His acquaintance with Ango Sakaguchi and Osamu Dazai began by picking fights with them; he looked down on them but associated with them frequently. Deeply admires Kenji Miyazawa and has read all of his poetry.

Kenji Miyazawa

Works: The Restaurant of Many Orders, Matasaburo the Wind Imp, Spring and Ashura, Strong in the Rain, Gauche the Cellist, Yamanashi, Night on the Galactic Railroad... and more. Origin: Born in Hanamaki-machi, Iwate Prefecture. Blessed with nature-rich surroundings, he deeply cherished his younger sister, Toshi. Details: Active as a teacher and novelist, belonging to the department of agriculture and forestry. Lived on a diet of four cups of brown rice a day. Said to have a sincere heart and a selfless, gentle personality. Loved tempura soba and Mitsuya Cider. Relationships: Kenji himself never met Chuya Nakahara. Kotaro Takamura was deeply impressed by the poetry collection 'Spring and Ashura' and praised Kenji as a 'possessor of a rare cosmos.'

Takuboku Ishikawa

Works: Sad Toys, Longing, A Handful of Sand... and other complete collections. Origin: Born in Minami-Iwate-gun, Iwate Prefecture. After dropping out of Morioka Middle School, he became active as a Romantic poet. Details: Had a slovenly personality, spending his days on alcohol and women. Apparently lacked much education in foreign languages; despite having a wife, he kept a diary of his affairs written in Romaji to hide them. Relationships: Admired Tekkan and Akiko Yosano; he was a contemporary and comrade of Hakushu Kitahara.

Ranpo Edogawa

His novel genres are characterized by perverse tastes, known as 'Ero-Guro-Nonsense.' His first love was a man, and he was bisexual. Relationships: Created his pen name under the influence of the great Western author Edgar Allan Poe. Seishi Yokomizo, who was Ranpo's editor at the time, became a novelist under Ranpo's influence.

Ango Sakaguchi

They were said to be special individuals who recognized each other's worth.

This is for my personal use. The eras are all over the place, and I only included the ones I wanted to talk to. I absolutely love Kenji Miyazawa. I don't think there's anything quite as wonderful as Meiji literature.
